CHARON-AXP creates a virtual replica of your original Alpha Hardware on a modern 64-bit x86 compatible computer system. It will run the original Alpha binary code, including operating systems OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX, the layered products and applications.
CHARON-AXP benefits from the newer faster hardware, offering owners of most Alpha systems equal or better computing performance. Very few changes are required to the original software – operating system, layered products, or applications.
CHARON-AXP runs on Red Hat Enterprise edition and Fedora 64 bit environments. The hosting OS can be installed on a new physical industry standard server or on a virtual VMware appliance running on VMware.
With the CHARON-AXP virtualization solution you can replace your aging Alpha computing hardware, with newer faster industry standard hardware for better stability and faster performance. The constant innovations Stromasys releases in the CHARON solutions, and the ongoing improvements in raw hardware speeds, combine to continually shift the performance balance in favor of cross-platform server virtualization.
CHARON-AXP creates a virtual Alpha environment on a standard Windows-based host system. Stromasys customers can quickly, easily and safely phase out aging and increasingly expensive DEC hardware, and replace it with an enterprise-grade virtual Alpha environment on an industry-standard Windows platform. No risky migration projects are required, and your end users will notice an incredible performance increase! For almost every VAX that was ever manufactured, Stromasys offers a CHARON-AXP equivalent.
CHARON-AXP creates a virtualized replica of the original VAX hardware, allowing the VAX/VMS operating system and software to remain working as always in their existing, binary form. No changes to the original software (operating system, layered products or applications), its procedures or handling have to be applied.
CHARON-VAX and CHARON-AXP are supported on ESXi version 4.1 U1 through 5.1.
Improved availability with double virtualization: CHARON on VMware
Hardware requires space and power, both of which add to operational costs, and hardware that is close to end-of-life poses an elevated risk of unscheduled downtime. Stromasys and VMware have developed different solutions to tackle these problems. Stromasys modernizes old legacy hardware with industry standard x86 servers. VMware improves utilization and efficiency of x86 hardware. Both technologies combined offer almost total availability.
Double virtualization, double reliability while cutting IT costs
CHARON can run VMS or TRU64 in a VMware virtual machine with either Windows or Linux as the guest OS. In the event of server failure, the CHARON virtual machine running on it can be transferred to another VMware ESX server using vMotion. This incudes VMS or TRU64 Cluster members.
Intensive internal testing has proved successful vMotion of an idle CHARON instance, as an application or service, vMotion of a CHARON instance running VMS or Tru64 without 3rd party applications, vMotion of a CHARON instance executing Oracle Swingbench tests and vMotion executing Oracle RDB. Storage vMotion is under development/testing.
In summary, CHARON supports vMotion as an application; however there is no guarantee that a particular 3rd party application could survive a move.
Stromasys cross-platform virtualization solutions let companies protect & extend past investments in expensive enterprise software applications, while lowering hardware maintenance costs and reducing the risk of unplanned downtime.
