Charon-AXP offers a powerful Alpha emulation solution for creating a virtual Alpha environment on your standard Windows or Linux-based host system. This allows you to run your original OpenVMS and Tru64 Unix operating systems running smoothly and reliably.
Charon-AXP emulator allows customers to quickly, easily, and safely phase out aging and increasingly expensive DEC hardware and replace it with an enterprise-grade Alpha virtualization environment on an industry-standard x86 platform.
There is no risky migration project required. No changes are needed to the original software (operating system, layered products or applications), its procedures, or handling. Your end-users will not even notice that the hardware platform has been replaced.
Mission-critical applications operate on OpenVMS or Tru64 using Alpha processors for two important reasons: stability and dependability. For every Alpha AXP computer ever manufactured, Stromasys offers Charon-AXP, which creates a similar hardware environment to deliver similar OpenVMS and Tru64 performance.
HP recognizes Charon-AXP as a valid virtual Alpha replacement platform to run OpenVMS or Tru64.
Charon-AXP eliminates the need to modify application source code and convert it, regardless of the Alpha AXP hardware platform your software was previously running on. This offers a smooth transition to virtual Alpha environments without any additional development effort.
Charon-AXP software supports both physical as well as virtualized storage. Physical storage is associated with local SCSI devices allocated to Charon-AXP. Virtual storage (container files) can reside on any storage subsystem presented to the host system. This can be local storage either SCSI, SATA, IDE or any other local storage.
Additionally, any network-attached storage can be utilized that is supported by the host, including iSCSI, SAN, NAS, Samba/CIFS and NFS. Enterprise-class Charon-AXP products support direct connection to SAN with Emulex FC adapters. Charon-AXP also supports VMS and Tru64 Clustering.
Charon-AXP provides a variety of networking and character terminal-oriented interfaces. It virtualizes the Ethernet controllers present in the original Alpha AXP hardware. Any protocol that ran on these controllers (DECnet, TCP/IP, LAT) will run over a virtualized link.
