The Charon-VAX emulation solution is designed on the principle of Lift and Shift legacy migration. It primarily creates a virtual VAX replica of the existing VAX hardware on standard Linux or Windows-based hosts. Its dynamic VAX virtualization capabilities empower you to run the existing binary form, which includes VAX/VMS Operating Systems, their layered products, and applications.
VAX virtualization will be implemented on the outdated DEC VAX hardware and replaced with an enterprise-grade modern environment (x86 or cloud). The existing OS (OpenVMS) and legacy applications operating on the legacy hardware will run in a new environment without any change.
Stop wasting time, money, and resources on outdated VAX hardware. Run your essential OpenVMS applications on a modern platform (on-prem or cloud) – WITHOUT any application changes.
Explore how Charon-VAX revolutionizes your legacy DEC VAX systems by providing customized virtualization and streamlined management.
The various models of the Charon-VAX emulation family support the appropriate hardware for their architecture.
Memory can be specified to the architectural limits of the emulated systems.
Virtual storage (container files) – Resides on any storage subsystem presented to the host system.
Additionally, any network-attached storage supported by the host can be utilized, including iSCSI, SAN, NAS, Samba/CIFS, and NFS. Charon-VAX virtualization software also supports OpenVMS Clustering.
Charon-VAX virtualization provides a variety of networking and character terminal-oriented interfaces, including support for legacy VAX terminals. The Charon-VAX emulator replicates the Ethernet controllers found in the original VAX hardware. Any protocol that runs on these controllers (DECnet, TCP/IP, LAT) will run over a virtualized link. With virtual Charon-VAX,, organizations can replace VAX hardware without hassle, knowing their existing software will operate without modification.

“The system remained up for a year before we shut down for routine maintenance. It is even more stable than the original VAX.”
Some industries, such as telecommunications, manufacturing, banking, and finance, among others, were using DEC VAX legacy hardware for their operations.
Legacy VAX systems utilize the Synchronous Backplane Interconnect (SBI), which provides high-throughput communication between the CPU, memory, and I/O.
Yes, it supports multiple VAX virtual machines running concurrently on a host system.
Charon VAX requires a host platform that meets the minimum hardware/software criteria, has administrative privileges, and is installed via the provided installer package.
Charon VAX emulator eliminates risks associated with aging DEC VAX hardware. It enables a seamless transition to modern platforms, such as x86 servers, without any modifications.
