Uncover the future of SPARC Emulation with Charon SSP.
Download DatasheetThe PDP hardware was developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the 1970s. It became very popular for its innovative architecture and ease of programming. Over time, the vendor has stopped offering support for legacy DEC PDP 11 workstations and servers, resulting in hardware obsolescence. It leads to a scarcity of replacement parts, which drives up maintenance costs, resulting in unplanned downtime.
It not only impacts business performance and productivity but also strains IT budgets. The replacement of the entire legacy infrastructure is expensive and time-consuming. Moving to a new environment is risky and can raise compatibility and data security challenges.
Eliminate unexpected downtime and ensure seamless operation of critical workloads.
Reduces the increasing maintenance costs by eliminating aging legacy PDP-11 systems.
Maintain your original environment with no migration risks or code modifications.
Latest disaster recovery & advanced security measures to protect sensitive business and client data.
Seamless integration with modern applications to improve performance and efficiency.
Offers enhanced reliability, flexibility, and scalability to meet the growing business requirements.
Stromasys‘ PDP-11 emulator (Charon-PDP) is designed on the principle of Lift and Shift or rehosting. It creates a virtual PDP replica on standard Microsoft Windows-based hosts. It enables the users to quickly, easily, and securely phase out from the outdated DEC PDP–11 hardware hardware and replace it with an enterprise-grade virtual Charon-PDP environment on an industry-standard x86 platform.
It requires no risky migration procedure, and zero changes are made to the original software, including the operating systems, layered products, or any other legacy applications. The end users will not notice any change that the PDP hardware has been replaced as they will get an environment similar to the existing one.

how it generates virtual Charon instances in modern environments.
Stromasys offers a virtual Charon-PDP equivalent for every DEC PDP hardware ever manufactured. HP has recognized Charon-PDP virtualization solutions as a valid replacement for the PDP-11 platform to run RSX-11M, RT11, and RSTS. No application source code conversion is required, no matter which PDP hardware platform your software operates on.
Charon-PDP requires a host server with a CPU> 3Ghz and 2 cores. The server can be a physical server or a VMware virtual machine running the Windows operating system.
Two models of the Charon PDP family support the appropriate hardware for their architecture.
Charon-PDP emulation supports both virtualized storage and physical storage. Physical storage is associated with local SCSI devices allocated to Charon-PDP. Virtual storage (container files) can reside on any storage subsystem presented to the host system. It can be either SCSI, SATA, IDE, or any other local storage (including USB).
Additionally, any network-attached storage supported by the host, including iSCSI, SAN, NAS, Samba/CIFS, and NFS, can be utilized.
The Charon-PDP emulation solution offers various networking and character terminal-oriented interfaces. It virtualizes the Ethernet controllers present in the original PDP hardware.
Stromasys has helped hundreds of organizations simplify the support and operations of legacy applications for more than 20 years.

“We went from paying more than $100,000 in maintenance fees per year to paying just under $10,000 yearly. And it took virtually no effort on our part.”
The PDP-11 models include the PDP-11/20, /40, /70, MicroPDP-11/83, and/93, as well as various QBUS and UNIBUS configurations, each optimized for different performance and needs.
Legacy operating systems that ran on PDP-11 hardware are RSX-11, RT-11, UNIX (including early editions), RSTS, and third-party OS choices.
Charon PDP is a cross-platform virtualization solution that emulates PDP-11 hardware on standard x86 systems, replacing physical legacy hardware.
Charon PDP emulation solutions support Windows (Server and Desktop editions) with 64-bit operating systems, as well as popular hypervisors like VMware and Hyper-V.
The hardware requirements for incorporating Charon PDP include a modern dual-core CPU (2 GHz or higher), a dedicated Ethernet adapter, sufficient RAM, a RAID controller with cache, and a USB port for license hardware.
