Legacy applications on unsupported hardware can be a vital part of Rochester’s procedures and workflow. They provide a link to intellectual property (IP) that may still hold significant value. This link is at risk of being lost due to aging hardware and the inability to repair systems.
By utilizing Charon-SSP by Stromasys Rochester was most recently able to preserve legacy licensed design IP written and compiled in 1996 for Sun Sparc architecture. Stromasys is an original and leading provider of enterprise-class cross-platform virtualization solutions. They offer a remedy that allows for continuous use of legacy applications and mining systems for legacy IP.
Charon-SSP/4M/4U/4V are members of the Charon cross-platform hardware virtualization product family. Charon-SSP creates the virtual replica of the original SPARC hardware inside a standard 64-bit x86 compatible computer system.
For Rochester, the transition from legacy hardware to emulated system started with imaging the storage from the legacy system and saving it to a modern system. Merging the commands of the past and the technologies of the present, the Stromasys and Rochester teams preserved the operating system, legacy application, and design data.
This preservation meant no software rework was necessary. Original operating systems settings (Solaris 2.5.1), including kernel options, were kept intact. No translation of commands or data was necessary.
Accessing the emulated machine with Free and Open Source (FOSS) provided an upgraded user experience and improves productivity.
The overall performance of the emulated system has been enhanced. CPU intensive tasks that would have taken hours, can now be executed in minutes. Disk performance has increased since it is no longer reliant on SCSI disks that spin at low speeds. By using modern hardware at modern networking speeds, network and other IO performance accelerate as well.
Stromasys’ Charon-SSP software has extended the lifecycle of Rochester Electronics’ mission-critical applications through virtualization, modernization, and system enhancement. Rochester’s legacy design system, powered by Charon SSP, creates one of many solutions available to Rochester customers as part of their semiconductor lifecycle solution.
