In this demonstration, we’ll explore the key features of Charon-SSP on Oracle Cloud. It lifts Sun SPARC hardware running Solaris applications and shifts the workload to Oracle cloud.

Let’s focus on how the Charon-SSP integrates with Oracle Cloud and its capabilities for Solaris 9 emulation.

Oracle Cloud Configuration Overview

The Oracle Cloud instance used for this demonstration has the following specs:

  • 6 CPUs
  • 60GB of memory
  • a unique IP address

A secure tunnel connection has been established to ensure a stable and secure link between the local machine and the Oracle Cloud environment. This setup ensures that operations are smooth, and data is transferred securely.

SPARC Hardware Emulation: Running Solaris on Charon SSP

At the core of this setup is the SPARC hardware emulation. The current SSP configuration runs on a 4U emulation with Solaris 9. The management operational interface for this system is simple yet effective. From here, you can easily modify the configuration or tweak the system’s operations to suit your needs.

In terms of system resources, the virtual machine initially runs with 1GB of memory and a single CPU. But the system can scale up to 28 CPUs and 128GB of memory, depending on your requirements. This scalability makes it a powerful tool for running more demanding Solaris applications.

SCSI and Virtual Disk Configuration

In this demonstration, we also explore the SCSI setup. A virtual CD-ROM drive is configured to access installation media, and a virtual disk is loaded with Solaris. This setup ensures smooth operation of Solaris on the emulated SPARC hardware. It also provides a familiar and reliable environment for users familiar with Solaris applications.

Remote Graphics and User Interface

Although remote audio is disabled in this demonstration, the graphics are enabled in remote mode. This allows the graphical user interface (GUI) of Solaris to be displayed on a local virtual machine, providing a seamless experience for remote users. The desktop environment shown is the common Solaris interface, complete with the management console and terminal window for system control.

With its proven advantages, Charon-SSP will continue to revolutionize SPARC virtualization on Oracle. In fact, the new version, Charon-SSP 6.0 got even better with its MMU Pass-Through feature that offers remarkable performance boost on cloud.
